Over the past years the world has witnessed the evolution of the mobile phone from a gadget that was used to only call people. The cell phone has become a staple necessity for the American people, from a large and bulky device to a small, portable pocket sized device. A mobile phone is a computer device that can be used to send and receive messages, make and receive calls and with recent developments and ability to access the internet it is used to offer internet services to the owner. The cell phone was conceptualized in 1947 after researchers found out that small cells could increase the traffic capacity of the basic mobile phone. However, in 1973 Dr Martin Cooper former manager of Motorola made the first call on a mobile phone (Macnamara, 2010).
In 1973, the first generation cellular phone was developed. The second generation mobile phone was developed in 1991 by a Finland company known as Radiolinja. Ten years later the third generation mobile phone was developed in Japan followed by 3.5 generation and 3 G+. From 1973 to present day phones have evolved in the following ways, increase in packet access speed, storage size, portability and increase in number of functions it can handle (Macnamara, 2010). During the initialization of the mobile phone, the wireless device that weighed over 2 pounds was only used to make and receive calls. Mobile phones today carry out a wide range of tasks including; texting, browsing the internet, taking pictures and videos, playing music and many other functions. Other features include reduction of size, change in design and can be used to track through inbuilt GPS system; these are just some of the few essential tasks that a mobile phone can handle.
The whole world is living in a digitalized error where communication and almost every single aspect of the human life are dependent on technology. Hospitals, businesses and other institutions require easy, accurate and quick handling of activities respective of the firm. Through the wide range of applications that a cell phone supports people are able to carry out their activities easily, accurately and fast. Technology is a dynamic aspect in the world that grows each and every day (Guy, 2009). New things are developed all with the aim of making work and life easier, comfortable and convenient for man. Information Technology specialists strive day by day to come up with applications for mobile phone that provide social and economic services to the users and to provide entertainment as well.
Mobile phones are used to keep in touch with families, conducting business, and entertainment. With the increased number of function the mobile phone has become a necessary device for everyone (Goggin, 2012). Every region in the world has a population that has access or owns a mobile phone. Companies such as Samsung, Nokia, Motorola, Apple and Blackberry have taken the cell phone to a whole new level. With the aim of being the outstanding manufacturer in the market each company creates new applications and incorporates new devices into the mobile phone; this has led to the evolution of the mobile phone to a multipurpose device.
Mobile phones have made life easy and convenient for human beings and with the growth of technology new features will continue being developed. In the future mobile phones will become a true necessity to human beings.
