MA 3 Article Search & Selection

“Think Sheet”

Goal:

For the MA 3 Article Review, you will search for and select an article online that is related to the topic of television and its impact on viewers/the world. Make sure that the article is an argumentative or opinion piece. You will evaluate your chosen piece with the goal of explaining its impact on you as a reader, and whether it should be included in future iterations of ENL 101. In other words, did the author of your chosen article achieve their goal of persuading you? Did you buy into their argument? Explain how & why (or why not). This is a chance for you to contribute to future versions of this course by telling me what to (or what not to) read!

To get started, run an internet search for articles about shows that you find interesting! If you are not someone who watches shows or movies, try searching topically for articles that make claims about the human hobby of tv-watching/ value/lack-of value in watching television etc.

Complete this worksheet using your top three choices. It will help you focus and narrow your search before settling on the article that you will use to write your essay.

OPTION 1

Web address:

What’s the conversation or broad debate that the author is attempting to enter? What’s the line of inquiry?

What is the main point the author is trying to prove? What is the thesis of their argument? How do you now? Copy/Paste 1-2 quotes What kinds of support does the author provide? What kinds of strategies do you notice that help structure the argument? Did you find the piece interesting / compelling to read? Why/why not? Would you recommend for students to read this in future classes? If so, what critical reading concepts would you link to it? OPTION 2
