How the Advancement of Science and Technology Affects Knowledge
Knowledge is a philosophical idea that has attracted a lot of attention. There is need to understand how the current age of technology and its advancement affects knowledge. One of the philosophical issues that we learnt during the course is knowledge and the argument about its change. We learnt that knowledge and its nature are issues that face the inevitable change, and one of the forces that cause the change of knowledge is the growth of technology.
As the philosophy of knowledge (epistemology) teaches, knowledge is not static. Also, knowledge is not an object. It is a series of ideas and networks that link up to form truths that are universally accepted. The effect of science and technology is that it has created ‘new knowledge. Knowledge has changed by gaining the features of commercialization and commoditization. In the knowledge that technology has created, there is the dominant view that knowledge is no longer innocent of the idea that it is a commodity. In the era of technological growth, knowledge is no longer perceived in separation of what it can, and it is not viewed in terms of what it is. The important aspect knowledge has become the utilitarian value of knowledge. People need knowledge to perform various functions. They make major decisions using information or knowledge. It means that when one develops knowledge for commercial purposes, he or she must consider the needs of the end users.
The growth of science and technology has impacted the advancement of knowledge in various ways. Scientific knowledge has the aspect of empirics. Empirical knowledge is knowledge that has facts that have been tested and proven to be true. Scientists have developed new strategies for solving new challenges to improve the quality of life. One of the areas that have received a lot of scientific innovation and emergence of new knowledge is genetics. Scientists have conducted studies that aim at developing new breeds of animals and plants that are more productive and resistant to the environmental challenges. One of the techniques that scientists in biotechnology have discovered is called gene-splicing. It encourages the manipulation of the genetic make-ups of plants and animals breeds to develop new breeds that are more productive. The breeds that the technique creates are also said to be better resistant to the environmental changes, for example, the changes in climatic conditions. Biotechnology and gene-splicing are issues that have emerged as a result of the long studies that the scientists have conducted to find solutions to the current challenges. It proves that scientific knowledge is not static but it is in a state of continuous change.
The change in the nature of knowledge is an issue that the student accepts, especially in the current and modern age of development in science and technology. However, understanding how knowledge changes with science and technology is something that challenged the student during the course. It is because philosophy teaches that there are different types of knowledge. The examples of knowledge that the student learned included academic and applied knowledge. When studying the effects of growth of science and technology, it is important for the student to understand the precise ways in which it affects the two types of knowledge.
There is a difference between academic and applied knowledge. Academic knowledge is the students understanding of different subjects, for example, philosophy and religion, mathematics, etc. on the contrary, applied knowledge refers to how the student uses his or her academic knowledge to solve the immediate challenges. Application of knowledge refers a persons understanding about how to use knowledge. The student learned that what many people hold as the important kind of knowledge is the applied type. They prefer applied knowledge to academic knowledge because the previous type helps them to solve their problems. However, the student observes that both applied and academic knowledge are important because the latter is the foundational knowledge that has to be applied.
Even in the modern society that is technology-driven, academic knowledge is still important. As people argue about knowledge in age of technology, they tend to underestimate the importance of academic knowledge. Academic knowledge affects the growth of science and technology. Science and technology depends on academic knowledge because people must learn the skills of operating the new machines and using the new technology products. Taking the management of businesses as an example, academic knowledge is important because the companies need people who have knowledge about communication, management, engineering, among other disciplines. These are issues that people get in the form of academic knowledge.
Science and technology affects the development of academic knowledge by inventing new machines that improve learning. Today, the acquisition of knowledge in the formal set-up is technology-driven. Teachers use computers, podcasts, videos, and other forms of technology to make learning easier. The new technology also creates more links for the students to connect and socialize academically. Many schools, for example, have their social media platforms. They use the platforms to advance academic discourses. Students can also use the platforms to discuss issues that they do not understand well, for instance, solving mathematical problems. Such examples show how technological growth has impacted the acquisition of academic knowledge in positive ways.
It is also acceptable that technology, if used wrongly, affects the acquisition of academic knowledge in negative ways. It is the responsibility of the teacher to guide the students on how to use their technological gadgets in positive ways. Mobile phones have enhanced communication between teachers and students. Social media has even increased the connectivity in the learning environment at global scales. However, there are certain online sites that are not commendable for learners, and it is the teachers role to control the learners from accessing such sites.
In the students opinion, people ignore certain facts as they try to distinguish academic and applied knowledge. The student believes strongly that both of these types of knowledge and relevant in the modern day of science and technology. The assumption that non-academic (applied) knowledge is more important and relevant to technology driven education and industries is wrong. The students argument is that the two kind of knowledge complement each other. As people use applied knowledge in solving real-life problems, they need issues like ethical/moral behavior, communication skills, problem-solving skills, among other skills. They get such skills from academic knowledge. It is, therefore, true that academic knowledge supports the use of scientific and technological inventions in applied knowledge.
It is also the opinion of the student that the perception of academic knowledge being less important compared to applied knowledge can be solved through the use of ICT in education. The reason the student takes this direction is that many people tend to argue that applied knowledge is more relevant to the growing technology because it trains the learners on how to use the technologies to solve problems. However, I consider that the argument does not mean that academic knowledge cannot use ICT to improve the performance of children. There are empirical studies that have found that the use of ICT in learning improves the understanding of the learners. In experimental studies, learners who use technology (computers, podcasts, etc) in their learning have had better test-scores than the learners who do not use such technologies. The student holds that technological growth is relevant and supportive to both academic and applied knowledge.
Technology has created new focuses of education. Knowledge acquisition should not depend on teaching the content alone. Teachers should also teach the students the skills that they can use for creating supportive networks within their learning environment. It is the point at which technology integrates with knowledge. The role of technology is not to replace the traditional education that is teacher centered. Technology complements the traditional educational methods by creating the networks that increase the learners participation in the process of learning.
The student also concludes that to make technology more beneficial to knowledge in the current age, people should not perceive applied knowledge as more important than academic. They should get a keener insight and see how the two types of knowledge relate, and how they are dependent on technology. If they make the consideration, they will be in a better position to integrate technology in both kinds of knowledge and it means that the learners understanding of the concepts is academic knowledge shall improve greatly. Technology affects knowledge positively only if the society uses it correctly and applies it to both academic and applied knowledge.
