Critical analysis of Emerson ideals and their impact on modern American culture
In Emerson’s essays regarding nature, he believes that there is a problem, which exists in society. Furthermore, society does not know how to interpret the concept regarding nature. Emerson went on and came up with ideals that focus upon transcendentalism. The work by Emerson is represented in the form of thoughts and letters that are known to be authentically American. In order to know about matters that concern America, it is recommended that one understands Emerson’s work. Moreover, one has to understand the work as it gives an insight regarding how Americans live. Emerson has a unique voice, which shows that he is indeed aware that equality exists in culture. In turn, he believes that people often act in a manner, which is described as being transcended. Since, he was known to be extremely committed to his democratic ideals many viewed him as being pragmatic (Emerson, 2003. 89).
The writing provided by Emerson in his essays makes his personal philosophy known. Emerson overcame the challenges that he faced in his native, European country due to historical issues. In turn, he ensured that Americans were the ones to determine their own futures. He had a mandate that advocated for individual integrity to be rewarded and at the same time to exist with harmony. According to him, this mandate was more vital as compared to nature, which had to be domesticated on institutions that are materialistic. In the existing contemporary landscape, drive throughs have a lot of importance to many Americans. It should be known that Emerson insisted that Americans were to find ways of becoming self reliant. This means that drive throughs do not in any way make Americans become self reliant, but rather be over dependent on technology.
A drive through represents the connection between consumption and mobility to most people. Recently there have been a lot of matters that have arisen, due to the negative impact of drive throughs. The latter is known to cause a change in the landscape of obesity, which is constantly evolving. For example, a person can order for a Monster Burger at the comfort of their seats. Americans consider this to be extreme convenience, and in turn, many of them are frequents customers at the drive throughs. In turn, the drive throughs have been responsible for problems, which are affecting the people’s culture, as well as their health. The number of obesity cases in America has risen drastically and drive throughs are responsible to some extent. The American culture has become extremely dependent on the drive throughs to the point whereby, they have forgotten about being healthy. Instead of going to a restaurant to have a meal or preparing it at home, they prefer to purchase junk food, while in their car’s comfort.
According to Emerson, in nature there are many things, which can benefit people, so long as they are keen. He believes that natural beauty is indeed responsible for making people achieve their desires, so long as they use it wisely. Emerson comments that “Natural beauty relieves stress, but if one goes into nature looking to be relieved of their stress, they will be disappointed because one has to lose himself in nature” (Emerson, 2003. 154). The latter is applicable to the landscape on American drive throughs. People have ignored the vitality of going out and dining, and instead opted to eat food obtained at drive throughs. They are aware of the negative impacts, which the drive throughs have on their health, at the expense of unhealthy eating. It is only people who are virtuous that benefit from nature according to Emerson.
On the other hand, Americans have become obsessed with materialism to the point whereby, they have neglected their lives. Furthermore, the society is far away from knowing the truth since they have shifted away from the imbalance that makes them exist. It is vital to ensure that there is harmony in the society, and the world will be considered as being perfect. Emerson is concerned with the American culture and says that “the sun illuminates only the eye of the man, but shines into the eye and the heart of the child,” (Emerson, 2003. 290). This means that if people change their ways and act in a humble manner like children, they will be aware of how to live a positive life. The drive throughs are viewed by Emerson has evil that has taken over the American culture.
It must also be known that there are advantages, which are accrued, through the use of drive throughs. They are known to be time saving, as there are not many procedures involved before one obtains their food. One just has to place their order while in the car then drive a few meters and wait for their drink and food. Even more, the drive throughs have lead to the creation of jobs that did not exist before. Lastly, the drive throughs are viewed as being a unique product from the United States. Most people who hear the word drive through instantly think about America. In turn, Emerson’s ideal on how America needs to be has been realized as a result of the drive throughs. Americans have created their own uniqueness that has been embraced by almost everyone living there. It seems that drive throughs have in many ways helped Americans and even made their lives miserable. The latter relates to people who use drive throughs frequently, while ignoring the health implication related to it.
